Cala Bassa: pine shade and clear water

Three hundred metres of west-coast sand with pine wood right behind it, a roped swimming area, and a ferry from San Antonio through the season.

Cala Bassa is three hundred metres of golden sand on the west coast, about fifteen minutes by car from San Antonio. What sets it apart from its neighbours is the pine wood directly behind the sand, which means there is real shade here without paying for a parasol.

The water is shallow, clear and roped off for swimming, so boats stay outside the line. Rocky outcrops at either end give you somewhere to jump in from and somewhere for the fish to live.

Getting there without a car

A ferry runs across the bay from San Antonio through the season, every fifteen minutes when it is busy. It is the better way to arrive: the drive round takes about the same time, and the parking fills by late morning in August.

Boat trips from San Antonio also call here as part of a run along the west coast, usually taking in Cala Conta on the same loop.

What is there

Sunbeds and parasols, showers, toilets, changing rooms and a lifeguard in season. Wooden walkways cross the sand for wheelchair access, which not every beach on this coast offers.

Cala Bassa Beach Club takes up a good part of the frontage, with several terraces and more than one kitchen. The rest of the beach stays ordinary, so you can spend a day here without going near it.

There are pedal boats, a banana boat and a volleyball court. Fishing from the rocks at the ends is common enough that you will usually see someone at it.

When to come

The beach faces north-east and gets the sun for most of the day. Mornings are the quiet half: San Antonio empties onto the ferry after lunch, and from the middle of the afternoon the sand is noticeably busier.

June and September give you the same water with a fraction of the crowd. The pine shade matters most in July and August, when it is the only free shade on the beach.
