San Giovanni
The only villa on historic Torcello island, this seventeenth-century estate offers private gardens with ancient church ruins and a hilltop pool overlooking Venice's quiet lagoon.
The Only Villa on Historic Torcello
San Giovanni is the only villa on Torcello, one of the Venetian lagoon's earliest settled islands and the quiet precursor to Venice itself. Dating from the late seventeenth century, the property is surrounded by an enormous garden that still holds restored ruins of the Romanesque church from which it takes its name, preserved by the International Save Venice Fund. With a population of roughly 100 people, Torcello today feels a world apart from the bustle of Venice, yet remains well connected to it.

Description
The villa is furnished throughout with antiques and arranged across three floors. On the ground floor you will find a kitchen, entrance hall, dining room, a large outside veranda, and two bedrooms (one twin, one double) that open directly onto the garden, plus a bathroom with bathtub and shower. The first floor houses a generous living room, a library and study, a sitting room, and two bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom featuring a bathtub. One of those bedrooms also has a dressing room.
Three further twin bedrooms occupy the second floor, served by two bathrooms (one with shower, one with bathtub), and a roof terrace with wide, open views across the island. Outside, a 14m by 7m swimming pool is set on a small hill overlooking the garden. Wi-fi and Sky TV are available, and a barbecue rounds out the outdoor offering. A cleaning lady and butler are on hand five days a week from 9am to 1pm, and a gardener tends the grounds.
A five-minute walk brings you to the vaporetto stop, from where you can reach the centre of Venice or hop between the lagoon islands. Burano, known for its lace-making tradition, and Murano, celebrated for its glasswork, are both easy day trips. Back on Torcello, the Locanda Cipriani remains one of the Veneto's most storied restaurants, just moments from the villa. A boat can also be arranged on site with the steward for trips between 9am and 5pm.
