Santa Gertrudis sits at the exact centre of Ibiza, and it has drawn a certain kind of visitor since long before it became fashionable to do so. In the 1960s, artists and musicians settled here with little money, trading paintings for meals at the village cafés, and some of that work still hangs on the walls of restaurants around the square today. The current church, its bell tower dating to the nineteenth century, was founded in 1797 and remains the centre of the village exactly as it always has: a pedestrianised plaza built for sitting rather than passing through, ringed by cafés, art galleries and small boutiques that have grown up around it since.
