San Juan is a village built around one street and one church, and not much has been added to that formula since. The parish church here dates to the eighteenth century, raised next to a smaller chapel that a local landowner had built a few years earlier specifically to draw farmers to settle and work his land, an unusually practical reason for a church to exist. Around it sits a handful of cafés, a small town hall, and little else, which is rather the point. San Juan is the capital of the largest municipality in the north of the island, and yet the village itself has stayed almost exactly this size, a single quiet street rather than a town that grew to match its administrative importance.
