Ibiza Town has been inhabited for close to twenty-seven centuries, first settled by Phoenician traders around 654 BC who called it Ibossim. What survives from that long history is Dalt Vila, the walled old quarter that still climbs the hill at the town's centre, its Renaissance ramparts built on the orders of Philip II in a distinctive seven-sided shape. Narrow streets wind up past whitewashed houses to the Cathedral of Santa María de las Nieves, raised on the site of an older mosque, and down again to a harbour that has rarely stopped working since. UNESCO recognised the whole of Dalt Vila as a World Heritage Site in 1999, and walking it still feels like moving through several centuries at once.
Step outside the walls and Ibiza Town keeps offering more. The Puig des Molins necropolis, a short walk from Dalt Vila, holds well over three thousand Phoenician, Punic and Roman tombs cut into the hillside, one of the largest burial sites of its kind anywhere in the Mediterranean. Closer to the water, the old fishing quarters of Sa Penya and La Marina have kept their narrow lanes and market squares while filling in with galleries, bars and small shops. It is a town that has always made room for whoever arrived next, from Phoenician traders to fishing families to the crowds that fill its harbour bars every summer.

Ibiza Town sits about seven kilometres from the airport, a drive of ten to fifteen minutes depending on traffic, which makes it one of the most convenient bases on the island for a late arrival or an early flight home. Most guests use it as a place to end the day rather than fill it: dinner in La Marina, a walk up through Dalt Vila as the light drops, a last drink somewhere with a view of the harbour. The rest of the island, from the calmer east coast to the beaches near San José, is close enough for an easy day out and back.
