San José is, first of all, a village, and a small one: locals still outnumber visitors in its streets, and life moves at whatever pace the cafés around the church set for it. That church is the one thing here that doesn't feel small. Built through the eighteenth century and rebuilt more than once since, most recently after a fire in the Spanish Civil War destroyed its original altarpiece, it's known locally as the cathedral of rural Ibiza, three storeys of whitewashed stone rising over a village that otherwise keeps a low profile. San José sits on the road between Ibiza Town and San Antonio, close enough to both to feel connected rather than remote, without any of their crowds finding their way here.
