Aiyanna: yoga, breakfast and Cala Nova

A beach restaurant above the sand at Cala Nova, where the day starts with yoga and breakfast by the water rather than with a sunbed.

Aiyanna sits above the sand at Cala Nova on the east coast, and the thing that makes it different from the other beach restaurants along this shore is what happens before lunch. Yoga runs on weekday mornings and breakfast follows it, out by the water.

It opened in 2017 under the same ownership as Amante, further down the coast, and reopens each year in late April for the season.

The mornings

The yoga classes run early, and breakfast is laid on afterwards for anyone who wants it. Both are popular enough that booking ahead is sensible rather than optional, particularly in July and August.

Breakfast is the simple end of the menu: eggs, yoghurt with granola and fruit, good bread, juice. It is an unusually civilised way to start a beach day, and you are on the sand immediately afterwards.

The kitchen

Mediterranean, built around produce from the island and from their own garden. Fish and vegetables carry the menu rather than anything heavy.

The room itself is open to the beach, with the tall fringed parasols that have become the signature of the place. They are the first thing you notice in any photograph of it.

Through the day

Lunch runs long here, which suits Cala Nova. The beach below is one of the few on Ibiza that gets a swell, so there is usually something to watch, and the dunes behind keep the development back from the sand.

Live music appears through the season. Ask our team what is on in the week you are staying, because the programme changes year to year.

When to come

The season runs from late April to the end of October. June and September are the best of it: the kitchen is at full strength, the water is warm and the beach has not filled up.

Weekend lunches need a reservation, and so does yoga at any point in the season.
