Cala Vadella is a wide curve of pale sand on the west coast, about ten minutes by car from San Jose. Pine hills come down on both sides and close the bay almost into a circle, which is why the water inside it stays flat when the coast outside is choppy.
The shape also makes it a natural harbour. Boats moor across the mouth of the bay through the summer, and small craft run out from the beach to the coves along this part of the coast.
The water
Shallow, clear and slow to get deep. You can walk a long way out from the sand before it reaches shoulder height, and there is no meaningful current inside the bay.
That combination is why families keep coming back. It is one of the easier west-coast beaches to spend a whole day on with small children, and the beach is broad enough that it does not feel full even in August.
What is there
Sunbeds and parasols, showers, lifeguards in season and step-free access. Shops, bars and restaurants line the slope behind the sand, so nothing needs carrying down.
For the water there are pedal boats, paddleboards, waterskiing and boat hire. Excursions run from here along the coast, which is the simplest way to see the cliffs south towards Es Vedra without a long drive.
Parking
This is the weak point. The bay sits at the bottom of a hill with limited space at the bottom, and in July and August the spaces go early in the morning.
Arrive before ten, or come in the late afternoon when the day visitors leave. The light in the bay is better then anyway, because the sun drops behind the western headland and the whole curve goes gold.
When to come
June and September give you warm water and a beach you can park at. In winter most of the frontage closes, though the bay itself is a good short walk from the road.
If you want the village and the wider area rather than the beach alone, our Cala Vadella travel guide covers it.
