The cathedral at the top of Dalt Vila

The church at the very top of the old town, with a Gothic base, a later rebuild and the best terrace in Dalt Vila.

Santa Maria de les Neus stands at the highest point of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town, next to the castle. It is the building you can see from almost anywhere in the town and from most of the south of the island, and the walk up to it is the walk most visitors make at least once.

Its full name is Our Lady of the Snows, which is the dedication of 5 August, still the town's festival.

The building

The base is Gothic, from the century after the Catalan conquest of 1235, and the bell tower belongs to that period. Most of the rest was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, so the outside is plain and heavy while the tower is older and finer.

Inside it is white and bare. The Museu Diocesa next door holds the religious art, and it has opened only on and off in recent years, so it is worth checking rather than counting on.

The terrace

The square in front is the reason many people climb. It looks out over the port, the new town and across to Formentera, and it costs nothing.

Go early or late. The ramp up is in full sun by mid-morning in summer, and the light on the terrace is best in the last hour of the day.

Getting up there

From the harbour, the Portal de ses Taules is the main gate and the ramp behind it climbs steadily for about twenty minutes on cobbles. Free lifts run from the Parc de sa Riba side and cover most of the height for anyone who would rather not do the climb.

The Castell d'Eivissa is immediately beside the cathedral and has been a hotel since March 2026, so it is no longer open to walk into.
