The calm beaches of Formentera for a family day

Which beaches on Formentera suit a family day, and how to reach them without a long walk in the sun.

Formentera is flat, small and surrounded by shallow water, which makes it one of the easiest islands in the Mediterranean to take children to. The complication is not the beaches, it is the logistics: the crossing, the heat and the total absence of shade. We have grouped the beaches by where the ferry lands so you can plan the day around that.

From La Savina, where the ferry arrives

Ses Illetes is the famous one, a sandbar running north with water shallow enough to wade a long way out, inside the same natural park that covers the salt flats on Ibiza. It is about three kilometres from the port, walkable on green route 1 or a short drive, and there is beach service in season.

The shallowness is the point for a family. There is no drop-off and very little swell on the sheltered side.

Cala Saona is on the west coast, about five kilometres from the port, and is the only proper cove on that side. It has a sandy bottom, low cliffs on either side and a restaurant, and it faces the sunset.

From Es Pujols

Es Pujols itself is the main village beach, sandy and shallow with everything a family needs within a few steps: restaurants, shops, shade under awnings and a promenade.

It is the easiest option if you want to arrive, sit down and not think about it again.

Along Migjorn

Platja de Migjorn runs several kilometres along the south coast and is a different proposition: longer, more open, with the beach bars spread thinly along it. It suits older children who want space more than it suits toddlers.

What to plan for

There is no fresh water on Formentera and almost no natural shade. Bring both, and an umbrella if you have one.

The crossing sets your day. Ferries run all day from Ibiza and the last one back is as late as half past one in high summer and as early as ten out of season. Our team will confirm for your dates.

Hire on arrival. A car, a scooter or bikes, because the beaches are spread out and the sun is flat overhead from noon.
