S'Arenal Gran: the main beach at Portinatx

Oct 13, 2026Author: One of a Kind Travel2 min

The largest of the three Portinatx beaches, and the only one on that coast with lifeguards.

S'Arenal Gran is the biggest of the three beaches at Portinatx, at the northern tip of the island. It runs about 170 metres, widening to eighty in places, with fine pale sand above the water and a sandy seabed under it.

Because it faces into a sheltered inlet rather than open sea, the water here is about as calm as Ibiza gets.

What is there

Sunbeds and parasols, toilets and showers, and a promenade behind the sand with a playground on it. Restaurants, bars, shops and a supermarket sit along the front. Watersports run from the sand: pedalos, paddleboards, waterskiing and boat hire, some of it without a licence.

It is the only beach in Portinatx with lifeguards, which matters if you are choosing between the three with small children.

Accessibility

Better than most on the island. There is an amphibious wheelchair and special crutches, with lifeguard assistance into the water, which is a genuine service rather than a ramp and a sign.

The other two

S'Arenal Petit is the smaller version next door, quieter, with a volleyball net and old fishermen's huts, and no lifeguard. Playa Porto is the third, quietest, sand mixed with small stones and minimal facilities.

All three are a few minutes apart on foot.
