Sa Capella: dinner in a chapel

Sa Capella is a restaurant inside a sixteenth-century chapel on a hill on the edge of San Antonio. The building was never consecrated, which is part of its story: it was raised as a chapel and never finished as one, and five centuries later people eat dinner under its arches.

The room is the reason to come. Rough stone, high ceilings, a long hall of arches and candles down the tables. Very little else on Ibiza looks like it, and photographs do not quite carry the scale.

The terrace

Outside there is a garden terrace set against the hillside, which is where most people want to sit in July and August. It faces the right way for the end of the day, so an early booking catches the light going off the hill.

The approach road climbs up from the town, and the building appears late, which is part of the effect.

The kitchen

Traditional Spanish dishes alongside newer ones, built on local ingredients, with fish and meat coming off a Josper grill. There is a serious wine list and a good range of hierbas, the local herb liqueur.

Service in a room this size can be unhurried. That is worth knowing if you have somewhere to be, and irrelevant if you do not.

The season

Sa Capella opens in the middle of April and runs to the end of October, so it is a summer restaurant rather than a year-round one.

A reservation is sensible at any point in the season and necessary in August. Our team can arrange it if the dates matter.

When to come

Early evening, for the light on the terrace and then the candles inside as it goes dark. June and September are the comfortable months; August fills every table.

It suits an occasion rather than a casual lunch, and it works equally for two people or for a large table.
