The Fish Shack: cash, no booking, whatever came in

On the rocks at the end of Talamanca bay, grilling whatever came in that morning. No booking, no menu, no cards.

The Fish Shack, which locals call the Chiringuito de Maria, is a wooden structure on the rocks at Punta dels Andreus, the far end of Talamanca bay below Cap Martinet. There is no printed menu. Someone comes to the table and tells you what the boats landed that morning, and it goes on the grill.

It is about fifteen minutes on foot from the Talamanca beach walkway, past the last hotel, and the walk is the filter that keeps it as it is.

How it works

No reservations. There is no phone to call. You walk round, you put your name down, and you wait.

Cash only. There is no machine anywhere near, so bring more than you think.

The wait is real. Twenty minutes at a quiet lunch, an hour at the peak of August, and no shade while you queue.

The menu is fish, grilled simply, with salad and bread, and people keep walking out there for it.

When it is open

Summer only. The structure is taken down each winter and rebuilt for the season, so roughly May to September or October depending on the weather. It opens for lunch and runs into the evening.

Good to know

Go early. Arriving at one rather than two changes the wait completely.

Wear something you can walk in. The last stretch is rock.

Nothing else is out there. No shop, no shade, no alternative if it is full.
