Amante: three levels above the cove

A cliff-side restaurant above the cove at Sol d'en Serra, built in three levels, with films under the stars on Tuesday evenings in June.

Amante is built into the cliff above Sol d'en Serra, the small cove just south of Cala Llonga on the east coast. It is arranged in three levels, and which one you book decides what kind of afternoon you have.

The top level is the restaurant, looking straight down the length of the bay. Below it is a terrace for drinks, and below that a platform of around twenty-five sunbeds with steps down to the water.

The setting

The cove itself is small and stony rather than a stretch of sand, which is worth knowing before you come expecting a beach day. What you are here for is the position: the cliff, the pines and the open water east.

Because it faces east, the light is at its best early. Breakfast and lunch get the sun on the water; by late afternoon the cliff behind puts the terrace in shade, which in August is the point.

The kitchen

Mediterranean, built on island produce, and more serious than a beach club menu usually is. Fish and vegetables do most of the work.

A reservation is worth having. The restaurant is not large and the tables along the edge go first, particularly at weekends through the season.

Films under the stars

Cinema Paradiso brings open-air screenings here on Tuesday evenings through June, with the screen set up against the sea. It sells out, so book when the programme is published rather than on the day.

The same cove hosts a closing party at the end of each season, which is the one night of the year the place is loud.

When to come

The season opens in the middle of April. June is the month that gets the cinema, September has the warmest water, and July and August are busy enough that a booking is the difference between a table and a drive home.
