Cala Llonga: the sheltered family bay

A wide sandy bay between two wooded headlands, with shallow water and everything a family needs within a few steps of the sand.

Cala Llonga is a wide sandy bay about ten minutes south of Santa Eulalia, set deep between two steep wooded headlands. The shelter is the point: the water is shallow a long way out and stays flat in almost any weather, which makes this one of the easiest beaches on Ibiza with small children.

The village behind it is built for the same thing. A promenade, a playground on the sand, restaurants along the front and everything within a few steps of the towel.

What is there

Sunbeds and parasols, showers, toilets and lifeguards in season. From mid-June to mid-September there is wheelchair access into the water, which very few beaches on the island offer.

Summer ferries run along the coast from here to Es Canar and Cala Pada, which means a family can do several beaches in a week without driving.

The bay

Fine pale sand, and a bay deep enough that the beach stays wide even at high water. The headlands on either side are wooded and undeveloped, which keeps the view better than the village behind might suggest.

Swimming is straightforward. The bottom shelves so gently that you can walk out a long way, and there is no current to speak of in normal conditions.

When to come

The bay faces east, so the sun comes off the sand in the late afternoon and the beach cools early. That suits a family day: morning and lunchtime on the sand, then shade.

On Thursdays from May to October there is an evening market along the promenade, which makes that the day to stay on into the evening.
