San Jordi flea market: Saturdays at the racecourse

The car boot market at the old racecourse, every Saturday all year round, and the one market on the island that is not aimed at visitors.

San Jordi runs every Saturday of the year, from 8:00 to 15:00, on the old racecourse between the airport and Ibiza Town. It is a car boot sale rather than a hippy market, and it is the one market on the island that exists for the people who live here rather than the people visiting.

That is the reason to go. The stalls are tables and open car boots, the prices are what somebody will take for a thing they no longer want, and there is no version of it that has been arranged to look charming.

What turns up

Vintage clothing, records, books, furniture, tools, old jewellery, bicycle parts, plants, and a great deal that is simply somebody's cupboard emptied onto a trestle. There is a run of proper second-hand dealers along one side and a longer run of households along the other.

Clothing is the thing people come back with. Ibiza has had money passing through it for sixty years and a good deal of it ends up here eventually. For the shops rather than the stalls, there is our guide to shopping in Ibiza Town.

When to come

Early. It opens at 8:00, the dealers are there before that, and anything worth having is gone by ten. By noon it is winding down and by three it is finished.

This is also the market that works in February. It runs every Saturday of the year, which makes it one of the few things on this list that is not a summer answer.

Getting there

The site is the old hippodrome on the edge of San Jordi, five minutes from the airport and ten from Ibiza Town. There is a large field for parking and it is rarely a problem, since most people come and go through the morning rather than all arriving at once.

Quick answers

What day is the San Jordi market? Saturday, every week, all year round.

What time? 8:00 to 15:00, and the good things go in the first two hours.

Is it a hippy market? No. It is a flea market and a car boot sale. For the hippy markets, see Las Dalias and Punta Arabí.

Is it open in winter? Yes, every Saturday.

Is it free? Yes.

Can you haggle? Yes, and it is expected.

Worth knowing

It is a working market rather than a day out, so an hour is usually enough unless you are hunting for something specific. Pair it with the morning rather than build a day around it: the beaches on the south coast are ten minutes away and the market is finished by lunch.

The rest of the week's markets are in our guide to the hippy markets in Ibiza.
