San Rafael: pottery, restaurants and two big clubs

A village in the middle of the island with the ceramics workshops, a strong run of restaurants and two of the big clubs on its doorstep.

San Rafael sits on the main road between Ibiza Town and San Antonio, roughly in the middle of the island. It holds three things that have nothing to do with each other: the island's ceramics tradition, a good run of restaurants, and two of the biggest clubs on Ibiza a few minutes away.

The village itself is small, built around an eighteenth-century church with a walled churchyard and a view across to Dalt Vila. Everything else is strung along the road either side of it.

The pottery

San Rafael is where Ibizan ceramics are made, and several workshops along the main road still throw and fire on site. What comes out of them is the plain, heavy domestic ware the island has always made rather than souvenirs, and the workshops sell directly.

This is the one thing here you cannot find elsewhere on Ibiza, and it takes half an hour.

The restaurants

For a village this size the run of kitchens is unusually good, and it draws people out from the town for dinner. It covers the range from a roadside grill to the more considered end, and because the village sits in the middle of the island it works as a meeting point from anywhere.

The clubs

Amnesia is a few minutes down the road towards San Antonio, and UNVRS, which opened in 2025 on the site of the old Privilege, is closer still. Between them they account for a large share of the island's club capacity, which makes this a short taxi ride home rather than a thirty-minute one.

The season runs late April to mid-October, and the full picture is in our guide to the clubs on Ibiza.

Good to know before you book

The main road runs through it. This is the island's busiest road and the village sits on it. Houses set back from it are a different proposition from houses on it.

Club nights are audible. In July and August, sound carries from both venues. If that is why you are here, it is a feature.

Everywhere is fifteen minutes. Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Santa Gertrudis and the airport are all about that, which is the real argument for the village.

Quick answers

Where is San Rafael? In the middle of the island, on the main road between Ibiza Town and San Antonio.

What is it known for? Ceramics workshops, restaurants, and Amnesia and UNVRS nearby.

How far is the airport? About twenty minutes.

Is there a beach? No. The nearest are fifteen to twenty minutes in either direction.

Is it noisy? In club season, from the road and sometimes from the venues.

Is there a market? A small artisan market on Thursday evenings, late June to mid-September.

Who it suits

San Rafael suits groups whose week has club nights in it and who would rather not spend them in taxis, and it suits anyone who wants to be equidistant from everything. It is the least scenic of the inland villages and the most practical.
